FAMILIES IN NATURE PROGRAM RECEIVES STATE AWARD

Congratulations to the Families in Nature Program! Clark County Parks & Recreation has been honored with a Program Excellence Award at the 2011 Nevada Recreation and Park Society (NRPS) State Conference for Families in Nature, Snow Shoe Hike & Camping Trip and Winchester Players. The award was presented at the NRPS Awards & Installation Dinner on Thursday, March 17th at Black Mountain Golf & Country Club.

The Families in Nature Program is a creation of the Clark County Winchester Cultural Center, the UNLV Public Lands Institute, the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership, and members of the Las Vegas Hispanic community who entered into a unique partnership. Together, they discovered that getting out on a trail or into a park or other natural setting is an amazing way to connect—not only with nature but with friends, family, and community as well.

The program started in 2008. Since then, approximately 600 people have participated in more than 15 field-trip and educational adventures. These have included snow play in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area; camping at Winchester Cultural Center; hiking at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Valley of Fire State Park; kayaking at Lake Mead National Recreation Area; and restoring native vegetation at the Moapa National Wildlife Refuge.
